Permabit公司正式成立于2000年6月，是一家专注于保存、管理固定内容数据的存储软件厂商。它的第一款产品Permeon Reference Vault于2003年10月正式面世。这款产品为用户提供了一个低成本的数据归档存储解决方案。随后，2004年3月，Permabit公司又推出了其第二款主打产品Permeon Compliance Vault。这是建立于Permeon Reference Vault之上的新一代CAS产品，提供了更多能够满足法规遵从的功能和特性。例如，Permeon Compliance Vault软件将把那些基于磁盘的存储设备转化为不可删改已保存内容的WORM设备。它为所保存的数据规定了严格的保存期限，对于那些已经设定的期限，用户只可以延长，但无法将其缩短。并且所有那些处于生命周期中的数据都不允许被删除或篡改。
Compliance Vault软件能够被安装在任何符合Intel标准架构的服务器上，并兼容来自不同厂商（Dell、HP和IBM）的存储设备。每一台安装了Compliance Vault软件的服务器都将成为整个Permeon存储解决方案中的存储节点。一旦增加新的存储节点或容量，原有的数据将自动通过现有的和新加的存储节点来实现自动转移，进行重新分配。同时用户也可以放弃原有的存储设备，将所有的数据都转移到新增的替换设备中去。这种灵活的特性使用户可以在任何时候都能够根据当时的实际需要来配置自己的存储架构。同时，用户还可以自主决定分配哪个或哪些服务器来负责某一个特殊的应用（如电子邮件的归档），以及哪些服务器来支持专门的固定内容存储及管理应用。
这样就使得两种或多种应用的存储池能够得到物理上的隔离，同时，Permeon存储解决方案还能在同一物理设备上实现多种不同应用数据在逻辑上的隔离。
Compliance Vault软件可将待保存的文件划分为块（block）结构，然后根据每个块上实际的独特内容产生相应的内容地址或称做“数字指纹”的固定信息。当存储系统将这些块写入磁盘时，Compliance Vault软件将重新计算这个内容地址，以检验其实际内容是否完好地被磁盘保存下来。最后，Compliance Vault会生成对应的内容证书（content certificates），这些内容证书中记录着关于内容地址的所有信息。用户通过校对这些内容证书，就可以清楚地了解所保存的数据在规定的生命周期中是否被改动过。
Compliance Vault为外部应用提供了标准的CIFS/NFS APIs，这就使它可以与大多数内容管理产品协同合作。但是，Compliance Vault本身并没有提供搜索和容量报告的功能。因此，这些功能必须由其Permeon的合作伙伴来实现，如iLumin、CommVault、KVS和Arkivio等。

- 增强的存储效率 内容寻址技术对数据进行了有效的整合。所有拥有相同数据内容地址的数据块都将只被存储一次，因此大大降低了采购存储设备的成本。相对其他产品的那种文件级的数据压缩技术来说，Permeon所采用的在数据块层面上的压缩技术要具有更高的效率。
- 负载平衡 Permeon均衡地为各个服务器分配磁盘空间、网络流量以及各种应用，自动对整个系统进行优化配置。
- 自我恢复和自我管理 为了提高系统的容错能力和简化系统管理，Permeon将把所保存数据的拷贝副本分发到网络中所有的服务器上。这样一旦某个服务器发生故障无法运转，Permeon就会马上将其保存的数据在其他服务器上恢复。同样，如果系统中添加了新的服务器，Permeon也会自动将其他原有服务器上的数据副本拷贝给它。
