存储技术经历了从单个的磁盘、磁带、RAID到存储网络系统的发展历程。在传统的DAS方式下，存储设备附属于服务器，数据则被局限在主机的控制之下。但这种方式已经远远不能满足企业用户分布式的业务需求，因而发展出网络存储技术。
典型的网络存储技术有SAN和NAS两种，虽然从技术上来说，SAN和NAS的出现是一种很大的革新，但是并没有实现真正的透明存储，存储管理用户仍然需要分别掌握不同存储设备的物理特性，才能对存储池进行有效的管理。虚拟存储技术的出现，可算作是最为有效地为用户提供统一集中的存储管理手段之一。
HDS首席技术官Hu Yoshida认为，虚拟存储技术的快速发展源于用户对超大容量数据有效管理的需求和减少总体拥有成本（TCO）和增加投资回报（ROI）的需求。虽然目前很多用户对虚拟存储技术仅是抱着观望的态度，但是他认为，未来虚拟存储技术将会有不错的发展。
新华人寿信息管理中心副总经理周建军也表示：“目前，我们虽然没有采用虚拟存储技术，但从技术实现的角度来看，它可以解决用户对存储效率和高可用性等方面的问题，尤其是那些对异构环境兼容性和远程智能自动化要求较高的用户。”
虽然多数人认为虚拟存储技术的出现和发展是大势所趋，也是技术发展的必经之路。但在我看来无论何种解决方案都有它自身的局限性，在使用上也会由于种种限制无法实现期望中的简便、高效。
根据实现方式的不同我们大致可以将虚拟存储分为基于服务器的虚拟化、基于存储设备的虚拟化和基于网络的虚拟化。
基于服务器的虚拟存储是通过将虚拟化层放在服务器上实现的，主要依靠管理软件。它们安装在一个或多个服务器上，实现所有存储设备的控制和管理，而不需要任何附加的硬件。
但由于虚拟控制软件运行在主机上，不但要占用主机的处理时间、影响运行性能，而且由于不同存储厂商硬件的差异，也会带来互操作不兼容的问题。
基于存储设备的虚拟化主要依靠具有虚拟化功能的存储模块来实现。虽然特定厂商的使用可以让实现更容易、管理更简单，但也因为同样的原因，使这样的方案缺乏第三方的软件支持，给未来的系统扩充带来困难。
基于网络的虚拟存储是通过网络将逻辑镜像映射到外围存储设备。因为介于服务器端和存储设备端之间，因此对外围设备没有任何的限制。但是这样的方案需要添加额外的硬件支持，对于先期部署成本紧张的用户有一定的压力。
除此之外，虚拟存储技术面临着保持数据一致性的问题。存储虚拟化虽然实现了存储资源的共享，但这种共享实际上包括了存储空间的共享和存储数据的共享。普通的文件系统只 允许数据进行独占式访问，但在应用上却需要在操作系统和数据仓库之间共享数据。数据的不同拷贝应该能够在不同平台上的应用程序之间传输。在不同的服务器、 操作系统带来存储共享冲突和进行并行存储引发I/O访问冲突时，虚拟存储需保证数据之间的连贯性和一致性。
任何事物都有它的两面性，虚拟存储解决方案也是一样。用户在选择虚拟存储技术的产品或解决方案时，应根据自身的业务应用特点，以此来选择合适的策略、性能指标和服务的优先级。只有这样才能极大限度地满足按需存储和个性化需求。
